Cgi and green-screen

Cgi and green-screen make music videos out-worldly in nature and allows the directer to achieve things that aren't physically possible and incorporate them into the video, an example of this is Linkin park's "Castle of glass" music video, where cgi and green-screen are used to create a virtual environment and objects within that environment. In the castle of glass example the pictures below show a part of the music video in reality and after the editing has taken place.

Editing ideas

Optical flow is an area of editing I am interested in using for our piece, it smooths out the slow-mo shots so well and is really good at conveying fast actions and making them look cinematic. The video below is a tutorial on optical flow.

music video inspiration task

Our krypton Son's music videos of catalonian love song and sunlight in the ashes are very simple yet effective, it is all filmed within a abandoned barn area and there is very little on the set just the artist the guitar, a chair and a microphone. This setting suits our krypton son's style of song as the song is acoustic and lonely, we can compare this song with a similar artist: Ed Sheeran, admittedly Ed Sheeran's music is more fast paced and upbeat but the similarities in the way they are shot are striking particularly comparing Ed Sheeran's: lego house (acoustic version) where it's just Ed and his guitar on a boat travelling down a canal. Ed does diversify with his music videos though, with his song "drunk" the music video is a clip which was recorded with the song over it. Even though this is different to our krypton son's video it still facilitates the use of blurs, focus shifts and even some cgi with a cat going with Ed to the bar. One way in which Ed's videos diversify from our krypton son's in terms of shot types.

In the video above (Ed Sheeran's - Lego house acoustic) there is use of focus on Ed for the most part of the video much like our krypton son's - catalonian love song, they both also make use of close up shots of the guitar make the viewer feel more involved with the music they are listening to. The focus pulls add depth to the video by making it seem as if Ed is reaching out to the people along the riverbank.

The video above of Catalonian love song by Our Krypton Son uses a lot of slow transition fades and slow pans to fit the slow pace of the song. In the music video are close ups of the guitar, these show the artist's skill and mastery of the instrument whist keeping the video simple and therefore the viewers attention is not distracted away from the soft lyrics. The slow transitions seem to keep in time with the slow pace of the music and the barren desolate barn provides an ideal backdrop for this type of song. The room all around looks in need of a restoration, the chair he is sitting on looks like it has seen better days and is in tatters, whilst the artist Chris mc Conaghy sits wearing a pristine suit and a nice guitar in his lap where as Ed Sheeran in his video is wearing everyday casual clothes and his usual customised guitar with a few stickers on it. So as Our krypton son are more formal, Ed is more casual and laid back in his videos.

S.T.A preliminary task

Negative pegasus originally from Brighton, the trio are a band currently on the roster for small town america and their genre is described as hard psych and there is a very ghostly and primal feel to their music, this is reflected in their profile photo on the small town america website as it looks post apocalyptic with blurring and vibrant colours used, it fits their description of their music as "psych to get you pumped and moving".
Negative Pegasus' profile picture on small-town america website
Neg peg's album covers are always very vibrant and are identical to each other only differing in colour scheme, they use colours like yellows, reds, greens and purples, this mass of colour attracts a lot of interest to it and mixed with the random shapes thrown into it, it certainly grabs your attention. A short paragraph on the small town america website read "The tracks on debut album Looming weave between primordial bone-shakers, stretched-out growls and ethereal retro-pop nuggets. Recorded over a period of 17 hours in an empty warehouse space in Sussex". This short paragraph summerises Neg Peg very well, they are chaotic, spare of the moment, random, are able to produce immense feeling pieces of music that gets you pumped. When they where recording their debut album Looming one of the amps Richard was recording with had a speaker that was totally disconnected from the rest of the electronics and they didn't even notice until after all the recordings were finished.

Neg Pegs music videos reflect their genre, their Looming music video is very psychedelic and incorporates light flashes, mirrored images as well as occasional appearances of their logo and album artwork, almost like subliminal messaging. In this music video the the video transitions are always in sync with the song which is in contrast to what looks like chaos in the video itself due to the over-layed images repeating of clips and quick cuts and flashes used excessively, the video also looks distorted as the clips are often folded in and out and the contrast has been messed with, all this adds to the psychedelic feel to their music and gives it its own individuality from other bands out there.

Negative Pegasus haven't got a website but they have got a their section under current roster with a short description and a background of who they are and where they came from. also on their section of the small town america website is a short description of their music, their music is said to contain "repetitive rhythms which are overlaid with ghostly vocals, primal, pounding drums, and a thick, choking haze of reverberant effects".

Negative Pegasus  released their "Looming" album last year on the 24th of december on a banana yellow colour vinyl,  Richard (guitar/vocals) for Neg Peg said that their Looming vinyl is " a thing of genuine beauty, you may wish to buy two copies one to play, and one to put on your mum's wall". This yellow vinyl targets their specific audience, they are releasing their music on a format not many people use but the people that do are most likely to continue to buy neg pegs music as they are the niche market Neg peg are targeting their fans specific needs and wants and by doing so are gaining their loyalty.
